The Sibiu International Marathon began in 2012 as a half marathon, added the full distance and its new name in 2017, and is now one of Romania's biggest running events: in 2025 a record 10,475 people registered — about one in fifteen residents. Its signature is the charity model: every runner picks a local project and fundraises for it, and over the years hundreds of initiatives have been funded this way. The race takes place in late May, starting from Piața Mare, with a marathon, half marathon and a host of shorter and children's races. The course winds through the historic centre and streets of Sibiu, and supporters pack the squares across both days of the festival. Sibiu is the 'city with eyes': roofs with eyelid-shaped dormers, the Bridge of Lies, the Brukenthal Museum, and nearby the ASTRA open-air museum and the road to the Transfăgărășan.
