Sierre-Zinal has been held in early August since 1974 and is a legend of mountain running: places are allocated by lottery, and the world's best mountain runners line up. The 31 km course starts in Sierre with a brutal climb out of the Rhône valley towards Chandolin, then follows a high trail above the Val d'Anniviers with views of five 4,000 m peaks, the Weisshorn, Zinalrothorn, Ober Gabelhorn, Matterhorn and Dent Blanche, before a fast descent to Zinal. A special tradition is the 'tourists' category, in which amateurs start early in the morning and cover the same course at their own pace, cheered on by the mountain villages along the trail. The Val d'Anniviers offers old wooden villages, the St-Luc observatory, Sierre's wines and trails to the glaciers above Zinal.
