The Sigulda Mountain Marathon is a late-September trail race proving that even flat Latvia can deliver serious climbing: the 35 km route packs in about 1,250 m of ascent, and the 70 km covers it twice. The course dives endlessly up and down the steep slopes of the ancient Gauja valley — roots, stairs and forest singletrack, past sandstone outcrops and caves. The race is ITRA-listed and considered one of the toughest in the country, a perfect test for anyone preparing for mountain races abroad. Sigulda is the heart of Gauja National Park: a medieval castle, Turaida Castle and museum reserve, Gūtmaņa Cave and a cable car over the river — and in late September the valley glows with golden autumn forest.
