Sparta Nytårsløbet takes place on 31 December: 5 km and 10 km through Copenhagen, organised by the city's historic athletics club Sparta. Many run in costume, then hurry home to prepare for an evening of fireworks and the monarch's New Year speech. Winter Copenhagen means the lights of Nyhavn, ice rinks and cafés serving gløgg; at midnight the whole city sets off fireworks.
