The Split Marathon runs in February, when the Dalmatian coast empties of tourists and belongs to itself again: start and finish sit on the Riva waterfront, directly facing Diocletian's Palace, a Roman fortress nearly seventeen centuries old. The course loops twice through the suburbs and past the old Poljud stadium, dips into the ancient ruins of Salona and Vranjica, then returns to the waterfront, where the Adriatic's winter sun usually makes up for a cool breeze. It's not Europe's fastest or most scenic marathon, but arguably its calmest way to see Split without the summer crowds.
Race-day weather
Mid-February brings 5-17°C — usually a mild Mediterranean winter, though it varies year to year, with some editions cold and rainy and others reaching a near-summery 17°C.

What started as an 'I don't know if I can do this' race ended up being a great experience: the course passes through the old Poljud stadium and a park section with ruins, finishing on the Riva waterfront.

The course can be tough — my watch showed around 450m of total elevation gain and loss — but everything else is easy: in February you can stay right on the waterfront, with the expo, start, and finish all a short walk apart.
