Stirnu buks ('Roe Buck') is one of Latvia's most popular trail-running series: six stages from spring to autumn, each offering Vāvere (5–7 km), Zaķis (11–14 km), Stirnu buks (18–24 km) and Lūsis (24–36 km), plus a kids' run and untimed hiking options. The 'Lielais fināls' in October closes the season at Priekuļi near Cēsis and works differently: the start follows a pursuit format based on the first five stages, so the season leaders set off first and everyone else tries to chase them down. The series champions are crowned here and the team Superleague grand final is decided. The course runs through the rolling autumn forests of Vidzeme on a carpet of leaves, with climbs into the Gauja valley — by October the trails are often damp and slippery. Cēsis is one of Latvia's prettiest towns: the ruins of a Livonian Order castle, medieval lanes, a brewery with centuries of history and trails into Gauja National Park.
