Stirnu buks ('Roe Buck') is one of Latvia's most popular trail-running series: six stages from spring to autumn, each offering Vāvere (5–7 km), Zaķis (11–14 km), Stirnu buks (18–24 km) and Lūsis (24–36 km), plus a kids' run and untimed hiking options. The opening stage is held in late March at Tērvete: after winter, runners hit damp forest trails, ancient hillfort mounds and pine slopes above the Tērvete river. The course mixes roots, mud, short steep climbs and fast descents, and spring weather can throw anything at you, from sunshine to sleet. The atmosphere is a big forest party: team standings and the organisers' trademark humour. Tērvete is a nature park in Zemgale with wooden sculptures of Anna Sakse's fairy-tale characters, trails up old castle mounds and a lookout tower, with Rastrelli's Rundāle Palace nearby.
