Ston Wall Marathon is held in September on the Pelješac peninsula, with a marathon, a 15 km and a 4 km fun run. The course follows Ston's historic fortifications, begun in 1333 when the town joined the Republic of Dubrovnik — originally about 7 km long and considered the longest preserved walls in Europe. Runners see stone walls and forts, salt pans and the Adriatic, and the peninsula's terrain makes the course hilly. Winners receive souvenirs made by children from a local association, and the race is known for its friendly small-town atmosphere. Ston has some of Europe's oldest working salt pans, the Adriatic's best oysters from Mali Ston and Pelješac wines such as Dingač and Postup.
