The Swiss Highlands Trail is a late-September trail race in Gstaad built around serious climbing and a human-scale organisation. The flagship Highlander 60 covers 62 km with almost 3,600 m of ascent, and there is also a marathon, 25 and 15 km races and a two-day challenge. The courses follow technical singletrails and rocky climbs to the Giferspitz (2,542 m), past Lake Lauenen and the Gälten glacier, over the Tungelpass, through the moon-like karst craters of the Gryden and along a 6 km ridge between the Saanenland and Simmental valleys. Gstaad is an elegant Bernese Oberland resort of wooden chalets, Saanenland cheeses, the Geltenschuss waterfalls and walks in the Lauenen valley.
