The Swiss International Mountain Marathon is a two-day August event in Meiringen where you can tackle a mountain marathon in different ways: as orienteering with map and compass (Light and Strong versions), as a score marathon in which you choose your own checkpoints, or as a trail marathon without navigation. It is an unusual format for those who want more than following markers, since reading the terrain, choosing routes and pacing yourself on alpine paths all matter. Above the Hasli valley lie meadows, forests, ridges and views of the Bernese Oberland peaks, and the atmosphere is more club than commercial. Meiringen is famous for the Reichenbach Falls, where Conan Doyle 'killed off' Sherlock Holmes, for the Aare Gorge and, by legend, for inventing meringue.
