TCS Lidingöloppet is billed as the world's largest cross-country race: since 1965, more than 30,000 participants have gathered each late September on the island of Lidingö, 15 minutes from central Stockholm. The classic distance is 30 km with about 520 m of climbing, plus 15 km, junior, veteran and children's races, relays and a wheelchair class. The course follows forest trails and dirt roads through the island's pine woods and rocky hills, and its famous long climbs near the end test even seasoned runners; the finish is at Grönsta gärde. Each year finishers receive a bronze medal with a new motif based on the work of sculptor Carl Milles, and the race is one of the four legs of the Swedish Classic. Lidingö is home to the Millesgården sculpture garden overlooking the water, and Stockholm offers Gamla Stan, the Vasa Museum and Skansen.
