The Šmarna gora mountain race was born in autumn 1979 as a local idea, became official in 1991 and hosted the Slovenian mountain running championships from 1992; in 2019 it was round seven of the WMRA World Cup. Today it is held in late September — on 27 September in 2026 — over 9.5 km with 710 m of climbing. The point-to-point course is almost entirely uphill and 95% on dirt trails, taking the quieter forest paths around the mountain to finish at the summit by the church and the famous hut. The men's record stands at 39:34. Šmarna gora is the Ljubljana locals' favourite walk, with views of the Kamnik Alps and the city, while Ljubljana itself has the Triple Bridge, the hilltop castle and the riverside market.
