Terwa Marathon (Terwahölkkä ja -maraton) is held in Oulu in the second half of May — the 2026 race was the 38th edition. Choose 5 km, 10 km, the half, the full marathon or the marathon relay, with a kids' minimarathon and pacers. The scenic route follows waterfronts along the Oulujoki river delta, and nearly two thousand runners take part, the half marathon being the most popular. Organised by Oulun NMKY, it has the feel of a spring festival as warmth and light nights finally reach the north. Oulu is the ‘tar town’ (terva means tar in Finnish, hence the name): the Market Square, Pikisaari island and endless cycle paths.
