The Texel Halve Marathon takes place in late September on the largest of the Frisian Islands and has one of the quirkiest starts anywhere: the race begins at the sound of the TESO ferry's horn, with some runners starting right by the ferry. Then come dunes, beach and forest, with all distances (half, quarter and eighth marathon) finishing in the centre of Den Burg. Texel is an island of sheep, lighthouses and wide beaches — visit the Ecomare seal centre and try the local lamb.
