The Alpaca Race is a June trail race in Hisingsparken, a huge woodland park on the island of Hisingen in Gothenburg. The organisers wryly call it 'a completely ordinary trail race', but the numbers say otherwise: 106 km on Saturday with about 6,200 m of climbing, then 53 km (3,100 m), 32 km (1,860 m) and 10.6 km (620 m) on Sunday, all on loops over steep rocky hills, roots and forest paths. Only a handful of runners have ever finished the full distance, giving the race near-cult status in the Swedish trail scene. Partners include Icebug, Umara and the IFK Ville club, and the mood is friendly and slightly mad. Gothenburg offers cafés in Haga, seafood at the Feskekôrka market, Liseberg and archipelago islands reached by city ferries.
