The Tokyo Marathon starts among the Shinjuku skyscrapers and runs almost entirely flat for forty-two kilometers, passing the Kaminarimon Gate at Sensoji Temple, Ginza, and Nihonbashi before finishing by the Imperial Palace. It's the flattest of the six World Marathon Majors, but also the strictest: checkpoints are spaced every few kilometers, and the overall limit is seven hours by gun time, not chip time. In return, runners get famously orderly crowd support and Japan's characteristic aid-station discipline, where each station number corresponds to the last digit of your bib.

Reviews

Tammy (Tammy on the Run)2025

Tokyo has a lot of rules and quirks that are different from other races — like the strict hydration-table system, where the table number matches the last digit of your bib; by the time slower runners came through, some stations had run out of water and Pocari Sweat.

Trevor (Marathon Training Academy)2024

The cut-off times are very strict — eight checkpoints besides the finish, starting at 4.9km; the course runs near the Tokyo Dome, through Asakusa by Sensoji Temple, and through Hibiya Park.
