The Torshavn Marathon starts at Vágsbotn harbor in the world's smallest capital and runs along the Kaldbaksfjørður fjord to the village of the same name and back — a classic out-and-back, with the one real climb at kilometer 36 that runners themselves call "the monster." The official site openly warns that Faroese summer weather is fickle: one year runners peeled off layers in surprise heat, another they fought headwinds and fog. After the finish comes a free dinner of salmon, homemade cake, and beer — an event so local that a medal is handed to you personally by one of the organizers, not an anonymous volunteer.

Early June in the Faroes averages 7-12°C, often windy and changeable; organizers themselves advise packing both shorts and a jacket — one year runners stripped layers from heat, another fought a strengthening headwind.

Dinner before the race
No established pre-race dinner tradition was found among runners; Toscana restaurant in central Tórshavn is mentioned in general guides and reservations reportedly are needed in advance.
After the finish
Water, cocoa, and a light bite right at the finish, followed by a free dinner for all finishers at "Reinsarí" — salmon, homemade cake, coffee, and beer or a soft drink from local sponsors.

The race started fairly innocuously with a gentle 8km loop of the city before a steep ascent of the coastal road with a stunning view of the North Atlantic; perhaps not the easiest course to do for my first marathon, but I couldn't think of another one I'd rather have done.

They said that this race was hilly and they were right — a real monster hill at 36km. And then, a beer and some fish soup, with cakes baked by local club members; well-organised and also brilliant fun, the clear choice for anyone's anniversary.
