Les Défis des Chalets – Le Trail d'Agaune takes place in October in Saint-Maurice and carries on the tradition of the Défis du Jubilé, one of the pioneering trail races of French-speaking Switzerland, created for the 1,500th anniversary of the Abbey of Saint-Maurice. The choice includes the Défi 40k, 42.2 km with 3,270 m of climbing, the Défi 25k, 24 km with about 1,650 m, plus 13 and 8 km races, the gourmet 'La Falaise Gourmande' walk and kids' races. The trails climb out of the Rhône valley to the local community's mountain chalets, through cliffs and autumn woods with views of the Dents du Midi. Saint-Maurice is one of Switzerland's oldest towns, with an abbey continuously active since 515 and a remarkable treasury, and a fortress carved into the rock above the Rhône.
