The Trakai Half Marathon takes place in mid-July, and its signature is the evening start: the half, 10 and 5 km set off at 21:00 as the sun sets over the lakes, with a kids' race at 20:45. Start and finish are by Trakai Peninsula Castle, and bibs are handed out inside the castle itself, giving the whole event an almost medieval feel. The course runs along the lakes and through the streets of the old town, with views of the red-brick Island Castle mirrored in Lake Galvė, and you finish in the twilight. Trakai is a former capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, 30 km from Vilnius: the Island Castle, the wooden houses of the Karaim community, their famous kibinai pastries and boat trips on the lakes.
