Trans Scania is an ultra of about 246 km across the southern Swedish province of Skåne, stretching over a whole weekend in early August. The first edition in 2010 was dreamed up by Stefan Samuelsson, inspired by the Barkley Marathons and Badwater: 31 runners started and 12 finished. Since 2011 the start has been on Långa bryggan, the long wooden pier at Bjärred on the Öresund, and the route winds over Skåne's trails, forests, fields and hills, or as one member put it, 'who knew Skåne's nature was so tough?'. Today it is run by Scania Road Runners, places go by lottery, and there is also a winter edition 'only for heroes'. Skåne offers the university town of Lund with its cathedral, Malmö, Öresund beaches and farm cafés among the rapeseed fields.
