The Transruinaulta Trailmarathon has been held in late October since 2014 and takes runners through the Ruinaulta, the vast gorge of the Vorderrhein known as the Swiss Grand Canyon. The 42 km marathon, with about 1,800 m of climbing, starts in Ilanz, runs along white limestone cliffs above the river, up steep climbs and along singletrails, and ends with a gentle descent through the quiet forests of the Heinzenberg to Thusis at the entrance of the Viamala gorge; the 24 km course finishes in Rhäzüns with views over the Domleschg. Aid stations serve Graubünden treats such as Birnbrot pear bread and almond Biberli, plus local cheese. The Surselva and Domleschg are a land of castles, mountain villages and rafting on the Rhine, with the resorts of Flims and Laax and the Caumasee lake nearby.
