Transylvania 100 is one of Europe's most atmospheric ultra trails: in late May runners start right at Bran Castle, famed as Dracula's castle, and 2027 marks its 12th edition. A UTMB Index race, it offers 100, 80, 50, 30 and 20 km distances, each with a limited number of places. The course climbs into the Bucegi range: twisting single track through ancient forest, high plateaus and windswept ridges, with the 100 km making a full loop via Mălăiești, Peștera, Omu, Bușteni and Bolboci and thousands of metres of climbing. It is a tough but breathtaking race, and finishing beneath the castle feels like a fairy tale. Bran and neighbouring Moieciu are the heart of rural Transylvania: the castle museum, wooden guesthouses, smoked sheep's cheese, and Brașov just half an hour away.
