Trondheim Maraton takes place every year on the first weekend of September and calls itself a 'people's festival', organised by the Nidelv IL club and Trondheim's corporate sports association. There is a marathon, half marathon, 10 km and 5 km, team classes, children's mini-marathons and a para-sport category, so the whole city turns out. The course runs through Trondheim's streets and along the Nidelva river, with views of the old wharf warehouses on stilts, the Old Town Bridge and the cathedral spires. Participation grows every year, and the organisers are already planning to expand. Trondheim is Norway's medieval capital, with the majestic Nidaros Cathedral, the Bakklandet quarter of wooden houses and cafés, Kristiansten Fortress and fresh seafood from the Trondheimsfjord.
