The Untersberglauf Salzburg is a short, brutally steep mountain race in late August; its ninth edition in 2026 drew more than 150 runners. It is only 4.3 km, but with 1,320 m of climbing and around 2,500 steps: the start is in Glanegg at 500 m, the route climbs the Reitsteig past the Zeppezauerhaus and finishes near the Geiereck summit. There are exposed sections along the way, and as well as individual rankings there is a team classification for groups of three or more. It is run by a charitable association, so every entry also supports a good cause. The Untersberg is Salzburg's legendary mountain, with a cable car and city views, and below lie the old town, the Hohensalzburg fortress and Hellbrunn Palace with its trick fountains.
