UTMB was first held in 2003 and has become the world's leading trail event: in late August a week of races brings the best athletes and around 10,000 runners to Chamonix, and since 2023 it has hosted the UTMB World Series Finals. The UTMB race itself is around 174 km with 9,700 m of climbing on the Tour du Mont Blanc trails through France, Italy and Switzerland, starting and finishing in Chamonix; most runners go through two nights. The Friday-evening start by the church, to Vangelis's music, is a moment many spend years qualifying for. Alongside UTMB come CCC, OCC, TDS, PTL and shorter races, and Chamonix offers the Aiguille du Midi, the Mer de Glace and alpine cooking.
