Vaarojen Maraton is held in early October in Koli National Park and serves as the finale of Trail Tour Finland and Ultra Trail Tour Finland. There's a distance for every temperament: a 130 km night ultra by headlamp, the 65 km Extreme, a 43 km marathon, a half and a 7 km dash; the Ultra and Extreme are ITRA/UTMB qualifiers. The course motto is ‘Trail. Rocks. Bedrock.’ — roots, boulders, steep climbs up the vaara hills and views over Lake Pielinen in autumn colours; one runner called it ‘gorgeously awful’. Around a hundred volunteers, great finish-line food and a warm atmosphere make it a favourite. Koli is Finland's national landscape, which inspired Sibelius and painter Eero Järnefelt; canoeing and hiking in summer, skiing in winter.
