The Joma Varaždin Half Marathon is held on the third Sunday of September; 2025 saw its 31st edition. Start and finish are on Capuchin Square, and the AIMS-certified course runs entirely on closed asphalt streets, with the first 8 km and final 3 km through the historic centre; the course records are 1:04:54 for men and 1:15:46 for women. The day before brings kids' races and a moving race for deafblind runners with their guides, while Sunday also features a 5 km citizens' race. It has a warm small-city atmosphere, with locals cheering their own. Varaždin is Croatia's baroque city, with its Old Castle, a remarkable park-like cemetery and the Špancirfest street festival in late summer.
