The Venice Marathon starts on the mainland, past the villas of the Brenta Riviera, and slowly pulls the runner into the city on water: a pontoon bridge across the Grand Canal, built and dismantled just for this one day, followed by Piazza San Marco and the Doge's Palace in the final kilometers. Italy is known for team pacing, and here the pacers run together as a group all the way to the finish rather than solo. Late-October weather is unpredictable — from humid warmth to sudden rain and high water right at the finish — so it's worth planning for both scenarios.

I ran as an official 4:00 pacer. The weather defied the forecast — instead of storms, humid warmth. The last five kilometers had fourteen bridges in a row, and that's hard work.

Tony Harris (Medium)2019

A personal best of 2:52:38. The first half along the Brenta river was really scenic, but the finish through St. Mark's Square — with a crowd loud enough to help me pass dozens of runners in the last few kilometers — was the highlight.
