Vilnius 5000 is a race with exactly one distance, 5,000 metres, designed for anyone who wants to squeeze out their best ever time. It starts in early June in the early evening, once the daytime heat eases, on Čiurlionio Street by Vingis Park. There's no long marathon build-up: a short warm-up, a fast pace and a finish where every second counts — a great early-summer fitness test for runners of any level. Next door is Vingis Park, the favourite haunt of Vilnius runners, with pine-lined avenues along the Neris. Vilnius means a UNESCO-listed baroque Old Town, Gediminas Tower above the meeting of the Neris and Vilnia, bohemian Užupis and Lithuanian food from cepelinai to cold beetroot soup.
An easy run with a local club the day before the race — the best way to shake out the legs and meet the city.
