The Martín Fiz Marathon is named after the 1995 world marathon champion, a Basque native who personally designed the course. The route runs along the wide avenues and center of Vitoria-Gasteiz, the capital of the Basque Country, with minimal elevation change (about 35 meters) and few turns — ideal conditions for a personal best. The race draws several thousand runners each year, and locals traditionally line the entire course to cheer, giving the event a genuinely homegrown feel. Vitoria-Gasteiz is regularly recognized as one of Europe's greenest cities, and after finishing it's easy to combine recovery with a stroll through the medieval old town or the green ring parks surrounding the center.
