The Vuurtorenloop Vlieland takes place in April on the quietest of the Frisian Islands — visitors' cars are not allowed. Half marathon, 10 km and 5 km: the course moves from tarmac to shell paths, woodland and dunes, every route passes the lighthouse, and the longer distances include about a kilometre of beach and two climbs of the Vuurboetsduin dune. The island is small and cosy: one village, Oost-Vlieland, bikes, empty beaches and a ferry from Harlingen.
