The WACHAUmarathon is an autumn marathon in the UNESCO-listed Wachau valley; more than 8,200 runners took part in the 26th edition in 2026, and the next is on 26 September 2027. There is a marathon, half marathon, 11 km quarter marathon, relay, Nordic walking half and a junior race. The course follows the Danube from Emmersdorf to Krems — flat, fast and stunning, past terraced vineyards, castle ruins and riverside villages. It is quick, too: in 2026 Kenya's Christine Njoki set a half marathon course record of 1:08:17. The Wachau means Melk Abbey, the ruins of Dürnstein where Richard the Lionheart was held captive, Grüner Veltliner and Riesling wines and its famous apricots.
