Zagori Mountain Running takes place in mid-July in the Zagori region of Epirus and is considered one of Europe's most scenic mountain races. Distances range from a fun 5 km and a 10 km trail to a half marathon, the 33 km Classic, the 60 km TeRA ultra with about 5,100 m of climbing (a UTMB Index race) and a combined 60+33 km challenge. The half marathon is the most popular, with more than 600 starters. The courses run along the ridges of the Tymfi massif, the rim of the Vikos Gorge, over old arched stone bridges and through traditional villages roofed in black slate — a UNESCO-listed landscape. Zagori means 46 stone villages, trails to the Dragon Lake, the turquoise Voidomatis river, hand-made pies and cosy guesthouses, with Ioannina and its lake close by.
